Episodic Gaseous Outflows and Mass Loss from Red Supergiants

چکیده
The red hypergiant VY CMa and the more typical supergiant Betelgeuse provide clear observational evidence for discrete, directed gaseous outflows in their optical infrared imaging, spectra, light curves. In very luminous CMa, mass loss estimates from bright knots clumps, not only dominate its measured overall loss, but explain it. lower luminosity Betelgeuse, similar of circumstellar condensations show that they contribute significantly to rate. We present new measurements both stars discuss additional ejections other supergiants. On determining the mass - loss rates of red giants and red supergiants based on infrared data
I review existing methods for determining mass-loss rates of red giants and red supergiants based on infrared data. The simplest method is based on models for the absorption and emission by dust which forms in the dense outflows from these cool stars. I discuss the parameters and assumptions upon which the method relies, review relationships between the mass-loss rate and infrared colours or fa...
متن کاملMass-loss from Red Giants
Although much is known about the nature of winds from hot stars and giants and supergiants with spectral types earlier than K, there is still much to be learned regarding the mass-loss process in cool, late-type stars. We will review the current state of research, with particular reference to observations and modelling of mass-loss from giant stars in symbiotic systems.
متن کاملThe Mass - Velocity and Position - Velocity Relations in Episodic Outflows
While observational evidence for the episodic nature of young stellar outflows continues to mount, existing numerical and theoretical models of molecular outflows assume they are formed by the interaction of a non-episodic wind from a young stellar object with an ambient cloud. In this Letter we estimate and discuss the effects of episodicity on the mass-velocity and position-velocity relations...
متن کاملPost-red Supergiants
The yellow hypergiants are found in a stage between the massive Red Supergiants and the Wolf-Rayet stars. This review addresses current issues concerning the evolution of massive stars, concentrating on the transitional postRed Supergiant phase. Few yellow hypergiants are known and even fewer show direct evidence for having evolved off the Red Supergiant branch. Indeed, only two such rare objec...
متن کاملObservational investigation of mass loss of M supergiants
We present the analysis of infrared photometry and millimeter spectroscopy of a sample of 74 late-type supergiants. These observations are particularly suitable to study the mass loss and the circumstellar envelopes of evolved massive stars. In particular, we quantify the circumstellar infrared excess, the relation of mass loss with stellar properties, using the K-[12] colour index as mass-loss...
